Japan plans to complete fiber optic network improvement two years ahead of schedule
Japan’s Ministry of General Affairs, in an effort to promote the response to the new crown pneumonia outbreak, such as online teaching, will advance plans to improve fiber optic lines across the country by two years, with the goal of making fiber optic networks accessible to almost all households by the end of 2021.

As of the end of March 2019, there are about 660,000 other household fiber optic networks in Japan that are not yet covered. The Ministry of General Affairs set a goal in June 2019 to reduce the number of outstanding households to 180,000 by the end of 2023, reaching almost all households. However, the impact of the outbreak of new crown pneumonia home office, distance learning and other highlighted the importance of network applications, the Japanese government decided to advance the progress of fiber optic network coverage by 2 years.
