Dario Gil

IBM Summit

Novel coronavirus DoNews March 23rd (press to MI), according to foreign media reports, the Trump administration announced that IBM is cooperating with the White House to provide a lot of supercomputing power to help researchers curb the spread of the new coronavirus.
According to a statement by Dario Gil, IBM’s research director, the technology company has teamed up with the White House Office of science and technology policy and the U.S. Department of energy to form the covid-19 High Performance Computing Alliance. Supercomputing will help researchers develop predictive models to analyze disease progression and model new potential therapies or possible vaccines.
“These high-performance computing systems enable researchers to do a lot of computing in epidemiology, bioinformatics and molecular modeling,” Dario Gil said. “If it’s done manually, these experiments will take years to complete, and if it’s done on a slower traditional computing platform, it will take months. “
The alliance will evaluate research programs from around the world and provide supercomputing capabilities to projects that produce the most immediate results, with technical assistance available to researchers using it.
The IBM summit supercomputer system is already helping the U.S. Department of energy identify drug compounds that could disable the coronavirus.
Other partners in the alliance include NASA, MIT, Rensselaer Institute of technology, Lawrence Livermore National Laboratory, Argonne National Laboratory, Oak Ridge National Laboratory, Sandia and Los Alamos National Laboratories, and the National Science Foundation. (end)
